Letter to my Students Regarding Social Media

Dear Friends,
I know that we don’t know each other, but there are some things that I must write about to let you know. There are things out there that our parents and ancestors never had to face, new dangers around every corner. As technology grows we get used to using them but forget the dangers that may occur. When putting our information out in the digital world we may become a victim and an easy target. People can find out information about us just by looking at our profiles in Facebook, Twitter, and other websites.
We need to take care of ourselves and protect our privacies. Many people will take advantage of the fact that they now have your phone number or the address to your house. You can be stalked and become a prey. Creepy people from the mall or your exes can get your life story off the Internet.
If you posted something on the Internet, would your parents or grandparents approve? If not then it’s not something that you should post. Don’t post immoral or disapproving things because you might end up regretting it. Whatever is posted online will remain there forever. Even if you think you have deleted it… it’s still there. Colleges can get a background check done on you and will Google search you or ask Facebook for your background check, and those immoral/illegal stuff that you had did and posted online will ruin your chances on getting in.
Also, people will tell on you for what you post on Facebook. If you smoke illegally or are not yet of drinking age and post pictures of yourself drinking you will be caught.
Please be careful and take great care of yourself. Do not let foolish stuff keep you from aiming for the stars.

Your Friend,
Sabina F.
